Ahead of WindEurope 2025, where Clarksons Research will be exhibiting alongside other divisions of the Clarksons Group, we have released a range of data points profiling the growth of the European Offshore Wind sector.

Shipping’s vital “Fuelling Transition” has seen growing investment in vessels capable of operating on alternative fuels. Meanwhile, on the shoreside, significant investment is required in “green facilities” at ports to support reduction in emissions. On a global basis progress so far appears to have been lagging investment in “green fleet renewal”, but here we take a closer look at some of the trends.

Shipping markets remain in positive territory, with our cross-sector ClarkSea averaging $22,566/day through late March, 17% up on the 10 year trend. There are softer conditions in some segments and heightened geo-political uncertainties. And shipping today is at the ‘frontline’ of many geo-political dynamics, with governments (including in the US) increasingly viewing shipping strategically.

The long-term outlook for the offshore wind sector remains generally positive, though the sector is currently facing some challenges.

Offshore oil and gas markets have seen some mixed trends over the last six months, though a 7% drop in our Clarksons Offshore Index still leaves it on a par with 2008. Extracted from our forthcoming Offshore Review & Outlook, this week’s Analysis profiles the short-term more cautious attitude to investment from oil companies, but also areas where there is continued strength in offshore activity.

In 2024, vessel speed trends were mixed across sectors, with containerships seeing a pick-up as a result of Red Sea re-routing while declines were seen in the tanker and bulker segments. However, in early 2025, a more consistent picture is emerging across the segments, with vessel speeds now softening across the board.

Since mid-2024, offshore dayrate trends have become more mixed, and new project final investment decisions have slowed. A factor here is a more conservative attitude by oil companies, given current high levels of complexity in global oil markets. Oil markets look well supplied, given a lacklustre demand side along with output growth, but geopolitical risks add complexity to the outlook.

US policy around trade, maritime and a range of geopolitical issues is evolving rapidly, with the container sector particularly close to many potential impacts. Tariffs have been a recent focus, and new levies on China-US trade are central to trends on the Transpacific; the situation is fluid and impacts are yet to fully evolve, but here we take a closer look at this key part of container shipping...

Ordering of alternative fuel capable ships rose to a record level in 2024, and accounted for 50% of all tonnage contracted. There continues to be no significant change in Red Sea transit volumes since the Gaza ceasefire was announced with total arrivals in the Gulf of Aden averaging 1.34m GT in the last 7 days, down 71% on 2023 levels (2024 average: down 70%).

Following announcements by the EU (74 vessels in relation to Russia), the UK (40 vessels in relation to Russia) and by the US (13 vessels in relation to Iran), the count of vessels sanctioned has increased to 1,317 ships of 49m GT overall (2.9% of global capacity), including 569 oil tankers of 85m dwt (13% of the crude tanker fleet, 6% of the product tanker fleet).

Continuing our monitoring of the latest datapoints around the ongoing disruption in the Red Sea, with no material change in vessel deployment patterns apparent since the Israel/Hamas ceasefire was announced in mid-January.

Vessel speed trends were mixed across the major shipping sectors in 2024. Average speeds increased in the container and LNG carrier markets, while speeds declined in the tanker, bulker and LPG carrier segments. However, vessel speeds have declined in early 2025, with 2025 to date average speeds below full year 2024 levels across most shipping sectors.
